Information For Beginners
Learning to fly without benefit of an experienced instructor is a recipe for disaster and can be financially and mentally frustrating to the "wannabe" pilot. The Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (M.A.A.C.), in compliance with the new Transport Canada now requires all new pilots to work with an instructor(s) until they can demonstrate a verifiable skill-set - a process that can take anywhere from a few weeks to a flying season to a year or two - all it takes is the time and practice commitment of the student-pilot. Furthermore, a revised formal 'flight training course' is currently under consideration which will be designed to augment both the learners' flying proficiency and knowledge of all things R/C. There are a number of mature, experienced pilots in the club who are more than willing to teach you to fly. You are encouraged to reach out - either in person at the field or by contacting any of the Club's Executive.
To fly at our site you will be expected to hold membership in the Windy West R/C Club. The annual fee is $130.00 and applications can be submitted at one of our monthly meetings (look under "2023 Events" for details of next club meeting) or via Canada Post. You will also need proof of M.A.A.C. insurance. A club application form can be found on this site.
The internet is a plethora of information for the potential RC pilot. In addition to the M.A.A.C. site ( maac.ca), a couple of other pages that provide good, solid guidance for the beginner include:
* scale-model-aircraft.com/remote-control-aircraft
* instructables.com/Beginners-Guide-to-Radio-Control-Airplanes
* tactilehobby.com/rc-trainer-planes
* rcguides.com/rc-planes-for-beginners
Remember - while it may be tempting to fly in city parks and other open spaces, bear in mind that Park Flyers should not be considered "toys" and you will be held liable if anything goes wrong and property is damaged or someone injured.
If you need further information please contact us.
